Maybe You Don’t Need a Perfect Holiday. Maybe You Just Need the Right One

Africa & Europe September 11, 2026 3 min read

There is a strange pressure that comes with planning a holiday now. You see someone else’s trip online and suddenly yours doesn’t feel good enough. Someone stayed in a beautiful hotel. Someone else spent two weeks traveling around Europe. Another person went on safari. Someone is lying on a beach somewhere with a coconut in their hand, and before you know it, you’re looking at your own plans and wondering if you’re doing enough.

Maybe you need a better hotel. Maybe you need to visit more places. Maybe you need a longer trip. Maybe your holiday isn’t really a holiday unless it looks good in pictures.

But what if you don’t actually want the holiday you’re seeing online? What if what you really want is just a few quiet days somewhere new?

Not everyone travels for the same reason

People travel for all sorts of reasons. Some want adventure. Some want history, food, beaches or nightlife. Some want to spend every day exploring somewhere new. Others want to disappear for a few days, sleep properly and come back feeling like themselves again.

There isn’t a correct reason to travel.

I’ve met people who can spend an entire day walking around a new city and still want to go out at night. I’ve also met people who are perfectly happy sitting somewhere for hours, having a drink and watching the world move around them.

Neither way is better.

The problem is that we sometimes plan holidays around what we think we are supposed to enjoy instead of what we actually enjoy.

Your holiday should match your energy

This is something I think people overlook.

If you’ve spent the last few months exhausted from work, a packed itinerary might be the last thing you need. You may not want to wake up early every morning, rush through breakfast and spend the entire day moving from one attraction to another.

On the other hand, if you get bored easily, spending a whole week at a resort might not feel relaxing at all. Think about what actually makes you happy.

If you love food, why spend the whole trip eating in the same hotel? Go to a market. Try local restaurants. Ask people what they eat. Give yourself a reason to look forward to the next meal.

If you love history, spend time with the stories behind the places you visit instead of simply taking a picture and moving on. The destination matters, but the way you experience it matters just as much.

You don’t have to copy someone else’s itinerary

Travel videos, blogs and recommendations from friends can be useful. They can help you discover places you would never have thought about on your own. But they should give you ideas, not instructions.

Someone might tell you that you absolutely have to visit five places in one day. Maybe you don’t. Someone might say a particular attraction is the best thing they’ve ever seen. You might get there and feel completely different about it.

That’s fine. Take the recommendations and make them yours.

If food is what excites you, build more of the trip around food. If you love walking, leave some afternoons free to explore without a strict destination. If you want history, give yourself enough time to actually understand what you are looking at.

A holiday doesn’t have to look impressive to someone else to be a good holiday for you.

Sometimes the best plan is a loose one

I like knowing the important things before I travel. Where I’m staying. How I’m getting there. What I really want to see. How much time I have. After that, I like leaving some room. Because you never know what might happen once you arrive.

A local might recommend somewhere you hadn’t heard about. You might find a restaurant you want to return to. You might meet someone who tells you about a place that wasn’t anywhere on your original list. Or you might simply wake up one morning and decide you don’t feel like following the plan that day.

That isn’t a failed itinerary. It’s just part of traveling.

Some of my favourite travel memories have come from things that weren’t planned in advance. They happened because there was enough space in the day for something unexpected.

This is where local knowledge can help

You can find almost anything online now. Restaurants. Attractions. Directions. Reviews. Videos showing you exactly what a place looks like before you even get there. But information and understanding are not always the same thing.

A local can sometimes give you the bit of context that a search result cannot. They can explain why a neighborhood d matters, tell you what is actually worth your time, recommend something you might otherwise overlook or simply tell you when a particular place isn’t worth the effort.

That is one of the things we want Gidi Tour to provide.

Not a rigid experience where everyone follows exactly the same itinerary, but a way for visitors to experience a place with someone who understands it. Someone who can help you make better choices while still giving you the freedom to have your own experience.

The best holiday is the one you actually enjoy

It doesn’t have to be the most expensive trip. It doesn’t have to be the longest. It doesn’t have to have the most activities. And it definitely doesn’t have to impress people who weren’t there.

A good holiday should leave you feeling like you spent your time well. Maybe you came home with hundreds of photographs. Maybe you barely took any. Maybe you visited ten different places. Maybe you stayed in one city for the entire trip. Maybe you tried foods you had never heard of. Maybe you spent an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing.

None of those things automatically makes a trip successful or unsuccessful. The important question is much simpler: Did you enjoy being there? If the answer is yes, then maybe you planned the right holiday after all.

We spend so much time comparing our lives with what we see online that sometimes we forget the reason we travelled in the first place.

You don’t need the perfect holiday. You just need one that feels right for you.
